What is Periodontal Disease? Tips to Maintain Proper Oral Hygiene

Are you experiencing swollen and puffy red gums that often bleed, and pain while chewing? Unfortunately, these are the tell-tale signs of periodontal disease. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s best to make an appointment with the Dentist right away to prevent further damage, such as tooth loss. According to the CDC, nearly 50% of American adults suffer from periodontal disease, which can lead to many other chronic inflammatory diseases. We know, this shocked us as well!

Periodontal disease occurs when plaque accumulates over time and hardens. Brushing and flossing twice a day is crucial to managing the amount of bacteria build-up in your mouth! Surprisingly enough, many studies suggest that if left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to arthritis, stroke and heart attack as well. Individuals who smoke are at a higher risk for developing the disease, which may make treatment more difficult and less effective.
